Before this you need to critique the other group’s blogs: What works? What doesn’t? Is it easy to grasp what their project is all about? Is it presented appropriately?

Then, each member of your curatorial team needs to complete the following interview and post it on their blog:

What inspires you as an artist?

What does the term ‘curator’ mean to you?

From both an artistic and curatorial point of view, what does ‘space’ mean to you and why?

What inspires you as a curator?

How do you perceive that attitude towards art in a digital context?

What are the challenges of digital curation?

What are the positives of digital curation?

Craft/Technology: Is there a difference for you? What is it?

Does digital technology change how you critique, produce and view art?

Can you describe how artists, nationally or internationally, have utilised digital technology in regards to their practice?

If you have not met all the requirements so far don’t worry – we are pretty much ahead of schedule and can work on it in class. Better to do a better job than a rushed job.

A curatorial statement that outlines the exhibition and puts it into a broader critical context.

An artist statement for each group member

An individual statement outlining the inclusion of other artists

At least five images the give a clear indication of the final ‘space’

Completed design material the actively promotes your exhibition

You need to upload onto the blog design concepts and plans before you post the final designs.

What image(s) are you going to use and why?

What colours are you going to use and why?

What fonts are you going to use and why?

As in any design project, every design element needs to be justified.

Also…use the web to research how other exhibitions have been promoted and outline why you like or dislike the design/promotional process of each

This week there are several projects to complete …

1. Develop your curatorial focus by considering the following…

- What other artist’s work (nationally/internationally) fall into your curatorial theme. How have these works been considered in defining your curatorial scope, if at all?

- Does your scope acknowledge and consider current trends in contemporary practice?

- Does this curatorial scope have the potential to reach the broader community? If so, how and why?

In considering these questions you should be able to develop a couple of paragraphs that strengthen your curatorial statement.

Adjust your statement to provide more of a critical context for your exhibition. What other exhibitions have dealt with the same or similar scope? Where were they? What artists did they include?

2. Provide photographic documentation of your internal gallery space. Before and after pics.

You have already provided a floor plan. Now you need to give a clear indication of dimension and space through photographic documentation. You need to photograph the space (book camera with Janet or bring your own). You then need to render these images. If you have blocked rooms out on your floor plan, block them out in Photoshop. If your gallery space is a white cube, transform the stone walls into flat white walls. Keep original images as you need to provide both before and after shots on your blog. This is quite a big task and will most likely need to be worked on by all team members or those team members with the strongest Photoshop skills.

3. Start planning a design to promote your blog

Are you going to use text or image? The challenge is to develop a visual style to compliment both the curatorial theme as well as the works to be included. What fonts are suitable? What colours? Consider how important the design process is to a curatorial project.

This six week project aims to provide students with an introduction into curatorial practice, the ability to use current and emerging technologies to explore their own art practice and the practices of their peers and the ability to be able to contextualize their art making within a contemporary setting.

Students will work in groups of three to develop and curate a virtual exhibition. The ‘venue’ for this exhibition will be the SCA basement. Students must use their conceptual and technological skills to ‘virtually’ transform this space into an art setting. Each students must produce original work for this exhibition that fits into the groups curatorial theme.

This project has a focus on sharing skills and responsibilities. By distributing tasks to specific members, the group will ideally produce a diverse project the demonstrates the implementation of and critical/creative engagement with:

InDesign

Photoshop

Illustrator

Flash

Online technologies

Digital photography

Freehand Illustration

And either…etching, screenprint, lino or woodcut.

Tasks will be set each week and the group must decide which process they will use for which tasks. Tasks may include designing a poster to advertise the exhibition, creating a floorplan, typesetting artist statements, documenting the space etc.

While the exhibition is virtual, all work and processes should be documented professionally on a group blog. This blog will be advertised throughout the university community to invite others to view your online curated exhibition. Therefore the final work needs to of a professional standard.

The final work will be presented to the class in week 6.

Selection of groups

Site visit

In groups discuss your own practice and locate a potential commonality that can tie all your work together while also acting as a curatorial theme.

Locate individual strengths – who is good at photography, illustration, photoshop etc.

Document the initial space (you can use any process you wish) and outline how and why you have chosen to use it.

Establish a name for your exhibition

Set up a group blog with the name of the exhibition. Make sure all group members can contribute to the blog
